Students undergo individual laboratory exercises to familiarize themselves with the methods, procedures and instrumentation they can potentially use to develop their diploma thesis. Students must pass at least 10 of the following tasks. 1) Introduction to Scanning Electron Microscopy and EDX analysis. Example of the measurement with SEM and determination of the elemental composition of the sample by EDX. 2) Measurement and analysis of ATR and Raman spectra of liquid and powder samples of organic and inorganic compound. Identification of studied substances and their structure. 3) Measurement of surface chemical state (quantification and electronic state) of one insulating sample (polymer, catalyst, food, etc.) and one conductive sample (film on Si wafer, metal, etc.). 4) XRD measurements of powder and thin films. Sizes and phase composition determination. 5) Photoluminescence measurements of inorganic and organic materials. Interpretation of experimental data. 6) SPM - measurement of surface roughness of thermally evaporated thin films and polished bulk samples, topography measurement of diffraction grating and lateral distribution of stiffness and adhesion on heterogeneous samples. 7) Study of thermal stability and crystallization kinetics by Differential Scanning Calorimetry and Thermogravimetric Analysis. 8) Study of optical properties (absorbance and transmission) of quantum dots: sols, thin films. Evaluation of measured data, calculation of the bandgap. Example of the ellipsometry measurement on thin layers and evaluation of measured data. 9) Measurement of particle size and zeta potential in colloidal solutions. Separation and concentration of nanoparticles by ultracentrifugation. 10) Measurement of the dependence of transport properties (electrical and thermal conductivity) of compacted polycrystalline materials on temperature. 11) Measurement of physical /mechanical properties of polymers - tensile, bending, hardness, impact strength, ITT, TMA, DMA, evaluation of polymer fibers. Possibility of excursion to laboratories of analysis and evaluation of polymers and their properties.
