Course content
Introduction, nomeclature. Characteristic properties polymers in solution and in solid state. Polymerization reactions - step and chain processes.. Condensation and addition polymerization, functionality of monomers, polymer architecture, gel point. Radical addition polymerization, reactivity ratios, methods of radical polymerization - solution, suspension, emulsion polymerization. Ionic and coordination polymerization - insertion polymerization. Examples of polymers manufacturing. Natural polymers . cellulose, starch, proteins, natural rubber. Basic methods of polymers processing and applications.

Learning outcomes
The course explains principles of macromolecular chemistry, polymerization reactions and basic properties of polymers. Properties of basic synthetic polymers as well as natural polymers are mentioned.
Student is educated in principles of macromolecular chemistry, polymerization reactions and basic properties of polymers, manufacturing and processing of plastics, rubbers, fiber forming polymers, natural polymers. He is aware of various aspects of polymer manufacturing and processing. He is ready to continue in master study in the program of Materials chemistry and technology.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of organic chemistry.
