Course content
|
Specific problems in biotechnologies. Classification of bioreactors, their most usual types and ways of operation. Factors determining the choice of particular reactor type. Fermenters with pneumatic stirring, fermenters with and without forced circulation of liquid. Fermenters with mechanic stirring. Classic separation methods in biotechnologies, separation with help of affinity chromatography, extraction with liquefied and supercritical gases. Environmental engineering, general basics of biological wastewater treatment processes. Technologies for treatment of individual types of wastewaters. Classification of membrane processes. Pressure membrane processes. Electrodialysis. Pervaporation, membrane separation of gases, membrane distillation. Membrane contactors and bioreactors. Combinations of membrane and classic processes. Selected industrial applications of membrane processes.

Learning outcomes
|
The course covers the principles of biotechnologies and membrane separation processes from a chemical engineering point of view. The emphasis is given on examining the systems and components that are common to most or all biotechnology production and membrane separation processes, respectively.
The students are acquainted with principles, physical and physico-chemical basics of biotechnological processes, ways of operation of bioreactors and their most usual types, and with applications of biotechnologies to protection of environment together with the modern separation processes and their applications in chemical, foodstuff and pharmaceutical industries, in biotechnologies and in wastewater treatment.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Oral examination
There is an oral examination. Primary form of exam is the debate about selected themes. Level of acquired knowledge, conceptions and application acquirements is examined. Knowledge is examined by test during semester and its result is included into total classification.
