Course content
Week 1 Specific and historical connections between life on earth, humans and the environment. Week 2 Geofactors affecting human health and existence. Week 3 Climatic environmental change as a superposition of periodic and non-periodic factors. Week 4 Electromagnetic influences, radioactivity, ionizing radiation. Week 5 Effects of human activity, anthropogenic zones. Week 6 Indoor environment, sick building syndrome and other health risks related to the indoor environment. Week 7 Effects of soils, subsoils, aquatic environment, muds, peat, etc. Week 8 Natural and mineral waters, water mediated effects on humans, water borne diseases. Week 9 Hygienic and ecological aspects of occurrence and movement of elements, metals and ions. Week 10 Beneficial and harmful effects of atmosphere, dust, smog, aerosols. Week 11 Beneficial and harmful effects of the biosphere. Hygiene, epidemiology and statistical methods, risk areas. Week 12 Mineralogical and biological methods in medicine, bioindicators, biomarkers, geographical information systems. Week 13 Balance between the environment and physical and mental health, sustainable development and prosperity; some pitfalls for further development.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students should have a comprehensive understanding of the geological, climatic, anthropogenic, chemical and physical-chemical influences on the relationship between life on earth, humans, the environment and health, including aspects specific to the Czech Republic.

Prerequisites
Knowledge of ecology, biology, geology, chemistry, and toxicology at the high school level.
