Course content
The subject of chemical engineering. Basic principles underlying the processes in chemical and food industries. Units and dimensions. Unit systems and conversions. Temperature, pressure, concentration. Material and energy balances. Basic thermodynamic conceptions and laws. Physical properties and state behaviour of substances. Fluid flow. Flow in pipes. Pumps and compressors. Solid-liquid separations. Filtration, sedimentation. Centrifugation and hydrocyclones. Pressure-driven membrane separation processes. Micro-, ultra- and nanofiltration. Reverse osmosis. Heat transfer operations. Heat conduction, convection and radiation. Heat exchangers. Drying and evaporation. Modern sources of energy. Fuel cells, solar energy. Biotechnologies. Specific problems encountered in production of bioproducts. Separation of bioproducts. Absorption, cleaning of gases. Separation of gases with membranes. Distillation. Packed and tray columns. Pervaporation. Liquid-liquid extraction. Supercritical extraction. Liquid membranes. Reaction engineering. Process safety.

Learning outcomes
The goal of the subject is to acquaint the students with basic principles and unit operations in chemical and foodstuff industries. The lectures are presented in English for the student to master the terminology necessary for independent study in various areas of chemical engineering.
Students are able to study chemical-engineering literature in English, publish and present orally their communications in this field.
Prerequisites
Mathematics I, Physics I, Basic physical chemistry, an ability to understand technical English

Assessment methods and criteria
Home assignment evaluation

The final examination is in the form of a short presentation on the given topic using audio-visual aids. Time for preparation of the presentation is approximately two weeks.
