Course content
Topics: 1)The arrival of the Slavs, Samo`s Empire, the Great Moravian Empire, the emergence of the Holy Roman Empire, the beginnings of the Czech State, the Premyslid State to the 11th century, the emergence of the Polish and Hungarian State 2)The education and art of Early Medieval Europe, colonization, the emergence of towns, the Tatar danger and the Holy Roman Empire, the rise of the Czech State in the 12th-13th century, the power politics of the last Premyslids 3)The Luxembourg dynasty to the Czech throne, Gothic culture, the beginnings of reformist movement - John Huss, the Hussite movement and its consequences 4)The Czech State under the Jagiellons, the Polish and Hungarian State at the end of the Middle Ages, the Turkish danger, Central Europe under the reign of the Habsburgs, Reformation and Counter-Reformation, Poland of Early Modern times, Renaissance and Mannerism 5)The Czech State in the pre-White Mountain period, Central Europe and the Thirty Years War - the course and the consequences, the Habsburg Monarchy in the struggle with the Turkish, the Czech Crown Lands in the Habsburg Monarchy, Baroque art 6) Enlightened absolutism in the Habsburg Monarchy, the rise of Prussia, the downfall of the Polish State, the Napoleonic attacks and the disintegration of the Holy Roman Empire

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to provide a basic knowledge of the historical development in Central Europe in the period from the 9th century to the 18th century. The main attention will be paid to the political and cultural development of the Czech Crown Lands, which will be supplemented with the outline of the development in neighbouring countries, or with setting selected events in the historical European context.
Students will gain a basic overview of historical development in Central Europe in the period from the 9th to the 18th century.
Prerequisites
The course is primarily intended for the students of historical-and-literary studies. Course provides them essential information about historical development in the Middle Europe as a basic knowledge for study of literature.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written examination

Participation in seminars (maximum of 3 unexcused absences), self-study of selected chapters, the achievement of relevant evaluation in running written tests (75%)
