Course content
|
Topics: Enlightened absolutism in the Habsburg Monarchy, the rise of Prussia, the downfall of the Polish State, the Napoleonic attacks and the disintegration of the Holy Roman Empire, the Congress of Vienna, Classicism, Romanticism, Biedermeier The Habsburg Monarchy in the 1st half of the 19th century, the revolution of 1848, the Habsburg Monarchy in the 2nd half of the 19th century, the National Revival, the unification of Germany The Industrial Revolution and the commencement of capitalism, the superpower rivalry, the First World War and its consequences, the establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic, the culture at the turn of the century Pre-war Czechoslovakia and its demise, Central Europe on the way to the Second World War, its course and consequences The division of post-war Europe and the development of the Soviet bloc, the renewal of Czechoslovakia and its development in 1945-1989

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to provide a basic knowledge of the historical development in Central Europe in the period from the 9th century to the 20th century. The main attention will be paid to the political and cultural development of the Czech Crown Lands, which will be supplemented with the outline of the development in neighbouring countries, or with setting selected events in the historical European context.
Students will gain a basic overview of historical development in Central Europe in the period from the 19th to the 20th century.

Prerequisites
|
The course is primarily intended for the students of historical-and-literary studies, or for the students who did not undergo grammar school (three/four-year) history course.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Written examination
Participation in seminars (maximum of 3 unexcused absences), self-study of selected chapters, the achievement of relevant evaluation in running written tests.
