Course content
|
Sources to the history of women. Childhood; discussion on its meaning in the past. Adolescence; access to education. Weddings; life inside marriage; various concepts of Reformation marriage; catholic regeneration and the Age of Reason; their impact on the status of women. Marriage and love. The status of a housewife; female economic activities. The farmer's wife; the town dweller's wife; the nobleman's wife. Widows; unmarried women; nuns. Women and art. Taking care of children; midwives. The problem of witchcraft and witch processes. The Age of Reason and the French Revolution - their impact on the status of women.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to provide basic information about the history of gender in Europe during the Early Modern Period, focusing on Czech countries. In this course, the history of women is the center of attention. Step by step, the course provides information about life-cycles, households and families, education and the professionalization of women, the features characteristic for the status of women in individual social layers, the emancipation of women in the Age of Reason and during the French Revolution.
Students will be able to analyse early modern sources from the gender history view.

Oral examination
Credit is dependent upon the student reading at least one monograph and one source on the related topics, and an oral examination based on the topics outlined above, particularly regarding the literature covered.
