Course content
Problems of "gender" study in the Middle Ages - medieval woman in sources. Medieval society - their norms and their development. The church and the control of society. Women's natures - protected women. "Good and bad" women. Family and society. Development in the Early Middle Ages. Development in the Late Middle Ages (Italy, Burgundy). Three sorts of people. Court and its culture. The image of women. The world of women. The reflection of women (visual sources). How women perceived women. Women in literature. Confessions. The Medieval household. Medieval female mysticism. The ways of addressing society.

Learning outcomes
The goal of the course is the comprehensive overview of the development of Medieval Gender Studies. Attention will be primarily devoted to the historiography. The course will focus on the history of everyday life, the development of gender imaging, development of the legal status from the gender point of view. We will also examine the narrative, theological and normative sources. An integral part of the course will be the interpretation of medieval female mystics.
Students will acquire an understanding of the contemporary level of gender issues, as far as the Middle Ages are concerned.

Written examination

The examination will take the form of a written test. Student abstracts on some of the topics and their presentation are conditions for admission to the examination.
