Course content
What is history? Is there any history? The historian and time; time and history (various conceptions of time and historical relationship; periods in history). Rules of law in a historian's work (archival law, authorship law, quotation norm, etc.). A brief insight into the accessory sciences of history. Sources of information and their classification (written and material sources). Work with sources (heuristics, inner and outer criticism, interpretation). Edition and editing technology. The historian and the Internet. Printed sources of information and working with them (technical literature, lexicons, encyclopedias, fusions, manuscripts, composite books, technical periodicals; annotation, news, review, abstract). Literature as a historical source. The outline and mission of research centers (archives, libraries, universities, academic departments). Methods of a historian's work. The historian and a text (text as an aim of the historian's work, the historian as a critic, rules for writing scientific thesis, quotation rules, bibliographic accounts, conceptions of Bachelor or Mgr. theses). Formal text arrangement, corrections, editorial work). Archival excursion.

Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to introduce students to the outline of developmental changes in the ways of perceiving history as a discipline of science from antiquity till modern times, the basic techniques of historical work, the types of used sources, the rules of criticism, and the interpretation of historical sources. The basic skills of a historian's work, working with historical literature, and formal rules valid for writing various forms of historical texts are practiced in the pro-seminar. The student will learn the basics of the development of perceiving history as a discipline of science. Standard methods of a historian's work are practiced, including writing various forms of historical texts.
Students will get basic orientation in history as an academic discipline. They will practice basics of historical method and of writing.

Credit is dependent upon a written review on a discretionary technical essay from "Sborník archivních prací" (Composite book of archive work); an account of literature (an annotation); three abstracts or excerpts of the compulsory literature; and passing the written test (the minimum for passing is 70 ). Deadlines will be specified during the seminar.
