Course content
The mission and basic characteristics of history studies. Institutions preserving historical records - archives, museums, libraries. Historical research centers in the Czech Republic. Historical magazines and composite books. Antique, Medieval, Renaissance and Humanistic historiography. Historiography in the Baroque Period and in the Age of Reason. Historiography in the 19th and 20th centuries. The accessory sciences of history (outline). Basic methods of a historian's work and sources of historical knowledge. Historical sources, methods of their exploitation (heuristics), their criticism and interpretation. Rules for writing a historical thesis. Ethics of a historian's work. Scientific instrument of a historian's work (quotations from literature, editions, and sources). Independent work with the source material - practical exercises. Abstract, annotation, news, review, study, informative article.

Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to introduce students to the outline of developmental changes in the ways of perceiving history as a discipline of science from antiquity till modern times, the basic techniques of historical work, the types of used sources, the rules of criticism, and the interpretation of historical sources. The student will learn the basics of the development of perceiving history as a discipline of science. Standard methods of a historian's work are practiced, including writing various forms of historical texts.

Credit is dependent upon active participation in the lessons (written preparations for individual lessons); presentation of a paper on the assigned topic; and a final oral examination, during which students must demonstrate their knowledge of the subject matter and the recommended literature.
