Course content
General features of economic development in the 18th and 19th centuries in Europe. The industrial revolution in England, other European countries, and the Czech countries - from manufactures to factories. Economy in the Czech countries in the 18th and 19th centuries. Agriculture. Business - national and foreign; advertising. Crafts - from completing one's apprenticeship to independent business. Lawmaking - Trade Laws and Regulations 1859 and its amendments; Business Code 1862. Economic corporations - from the 18th - 19th centuries - corporate body, trade communities, business gremiums, business and trade boards. Financial affairs - diminutive departments (banks, loan banks, "Raiffeisen" banks, credit associations), ample banks, connection of banks and industry Infiltration of new items of information in economics - literature (calendars, technical literature, technical presses), courses, wandering, exhibitions at home and in foreign countries, apprentices' exhibitions. The history of the carrying trade in general and with special regard to the Czech countries. Economic nationalism in the Czech countries. Economics during the First Czechoslovak Republic - industry, agriculture, foreign trade, national issue, armament industry. Economic integration during the interwar period - Danube area, attempts at a custom union, Economic Little Agreement. Social security, social lawmaking, public relief, homes, nurseries, orphanages, charitable societies. Social movements, socialistic parties, theories, practice. Emigration. Changes in economy after the Second World War, integration - EEC, RVHP (Council for Mutual Economic Assistance). Changes in the economic and social field in Czechoslovakia after 1948. Changes in the economic and social field in Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic after 1989.

Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to introduce economic and social history, especially in the Czech countries of the 18th - 20th centuries. Students will learn about the main periods of the development in the given field, and will be able to define and evaluate international connections. They will also work independently with sources and literature connected to the topic.
Students will gain knowledge of main stages of economic and social history of the Czech Lands, ability to evaluate international connections and to work independently with sources and literature.

Oral examination, Home assignment evaluation

A seminar paper is required. There are several options available: 1st option: working out an assigned topic from economic or social history in the range of five, normal text pages (minimum), including a journal and a presentation in a seminar. 2nd option: working out the outline of funds that are connected to economic and social history in some county or regional archive in the CR; a detailed analysis of one chosen fund. Reading a minimum of two manuscripts or four extensive articles (minimum of 40 pages) taken from a specialized press or composite book with the topic of economic and social history.
