Course content
Anthropology of the body - philosophical concepts and basic theoretical approaches of cultural anthropology of body. The body as a substance, machine or genetic information. The history of the perception of human corporeality and development of displaying of the body. The history of medicine or medical history? The characteristic of contemporary methodology, main authorities and periodicals relating to the history of medicine and social history of medicine. The doctor as an institution. The doctor and a relationship with his patient. The controlling master, altruist or a gold-miner? The case of Mengele. Madness and the healing of spirit. Epidemics - plague, syphilis, black pox. Medicine and women. Social construct of masculinity and feminity. The biological nature of the social and gender determination. Social diseases - tuberculosis, gout, nervousness, obesity. Discursive access to the "diseases" in the 19th century, self-abuse, hypochondria, hysteria. Alternative methods of treatment. Homeopathy, mesmerism, chiropractic, hydropathy. Acceptance of the non-conventional principles by contemporary medicine. Medical treatment and space - public spaces, hospitals, spas. Comparative view on the development of the contemporary problems of different health insurance systems. Was the presented reform of the medical system in Czech Republic real reform?

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce the main issues of the history of western medicine and medical treatment in the period since the Middle Ages to the present, with emphasis focused on changes in the medical thought, science and forms of medical care in the 18th and 19th century. Lessons will take the form of a debate about specific problems, for that is for students necessary to prepare on each lesson on the basis of specified text (will be available through the web sources). For the participation in discussion is essential passive knowledge of English, German or French.
The students will be familiar with the methods and results of research in contemporary social history of medicine and history and anthropology of the body. The objective of the workshop in each lesson is aimed also on the developing of participants skills of critical thinking and the ability of analysis and interpretation of the historical text.
Prerequisites
Passive knowledge of English, German or French language.

Assessment methods and criteria
Systematic monitoring

Colloquium will be given to the participants actively involved in workshop with tolerance of 3 absences per semester. Essential will be the study of prepared texts and presentation of participant´s own views during the seminar.
