Renaissance and Mannerism - characteristics of the style; changes in art and aesthetic taste in the period between 1400 and 1600. Individual lessons of the course will focus on explaining chosen examples of the works of the following artists: Giotto. Paolo Ucello. Sandro Botticelli. Raffael. Tizian. Leonardo da Vinci. Michelangelo. Jan van Eyck. Pieter Bruegel. Albrecht Durer. Baroque - characteristics of the style; changes in art and aesthetic taste in the period between 1600 and 1770. Baroque painting in Italy - Caravaggio. Baroque painting in Spain - El Greco, Diego Velasquez. Baroque painting in The Netherlands - P. P. Rubens, Rembrandt, Vermeer. Baroque painting in France - Nicolas Poussin. European Baroque landscape-painting. The painting of still-life and Georg Flegel. Baroque painting in the 17th century in Bohemia and Moravia - Karel Škréta, J. J. Heinsch, M. A. Lublinský.

Learning outcomes |
The aim of this course is to introduce students to the works of the most significant personalities in European Renaissance and Baroque painting in the period of the 15th - 18th centuries. Explanation will stress the role of leading artists, the context of individual works, the theoretical thinking of the period, as well as the specific conditions of local public schools and the significant role of cultural sponsorship during the period.
Students will acquire a basic orientation in the history of European Renaissance and Baroque painting and will become acquainted with the different interpretative approaches of current art-historical research in relation to concrete works of art. |

Credit is achieved by submitting a written paper on one of the assigned topics (5 typed pages) and a final interview in which the student must demonstrate their knowledge of the subject matter and recommended literature. |
