Course content
Interpretation and over-interpretation: an introduction to the issue. Celestial bodies (comets) and their historical portrayal. Historical portrayals of natural catastrophes (earthquakes, floods). Pamphlets and leaflets in Early Modern Europe and their message. Emblematics, its forms and meanings. Legal (juridical) iconographies and their symbolism in the history of Early Modern Europe. Human gestures, their types, historical portrayals, and their meanings. The ideology and rhetoric of a photograph (W. Benjamin, R. Barthes, S. Sontagová). Vilém Flusser and his consideration of the nature of a photograph. Czech history of the 20th century through the mirror of caricature (excursus).

Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to introduce students to the possibilities of an interpretative approach to various types of visual sources from the field of European culture from the Early Modern and the Modern Period. The basis of the seminar work is analysis of the relation of concrete historical events, texts from the time that deal with these events (chronicles, books printed during this period, and others), and their synchronic presentation through visual media.
Students will gain an understanding of the strategies in modern visual culture and will master the skills necessary for a theoretical and critical consideration of cultural-historical phenomena.

Credit is determined by writing and orally presenting a semester paper on one of the assigned topics and passing a final oral examination interview where the student must demonstrate an understanding of recommended the literature and subject matter discussed.
