Course content
|
Introduction to the main interrelated environmental and economic problems arisen from human activities Main Principles and Strategies on Sustainable Development Life Cycle Assessment, ecolabelling, environmental audit, environmental performance and reporting. Relations between environmental quality, economic activity and population growth. Development of environmental policies for the promotion of a sustainable development. Agenda 21 Modeling environmental problems as market failures: Theory of public goods and theory of externalities. Structure of environmental policy tools and practical principles. Main direct administrative (command and control approaches) tools and environmental regulations in EU and more specifically, in CZ. Indirect economic (market-based instruments) tools for dealing with environmental problems. A special focus on the case of CZ. Pollution Permit Trading System: emission Allowances and certificates and its tradable mechanisms. Pollution charges for the environmental protection of natural resources and Deposit/Refund systems for avoiding improper waste disposal. Mechanisms of financing environmental protection. Valuation methods of natural resources. Quantification methods of environmental damages. Problems related to the assessment of effectiveness on investments in the environmental protection. Multi-criteria evaluation. Environmental Management Systems and its standardization.

Learning outcomes
|
To provide knowledge about the related impacts on the environment due to anthropogenic activities and alternative ways to promote a sustainable development.
The students will learn how to valuate different kinds of natural resources and how to internalize (in monetary terms) the costs of negative external impacts on the environment which may result from any type of venture or project.

Prerequisites
|
A basic knowledge on microeconomics, macroeconomics and management sciences.

|
Written examination
Conditions for examination are an active participation in the lessons and a sufficient final average grade on the tests.
