In the first chapter theories on the precise origins, definitions and characteristics of theatrical expressionism in general and especially in the context of American modernism of the early 20th century should be outlined. The theory selected should be directly applicable to MACHINAL and should then be used to analyze the play in later chapters. The longest and most important part of the BP should be an analysis of the characters, plot, figures and themes of MACHINAL using the tools and background in the earlier chapters. In this section, specific examples of how women's roles have been represented throughout the history of American drama should be compared and contrasted with the characters (male and female) in MACHINAL. Specific comparisons of how women's roles are portrayed by female and male playwrights of the time may be used as examples of the BP author's main points of analysis. A key research goal should be to find ways in which the expressionistic devices of the play are used to highlight women's roles and other issues in ways that other theatrical and literary styles cannot. Throughout the BP specific examples from other important plays of the period should be briefly mentioned to illustrate concrete aspects of both the theoretical background in the early chapters as well as the main points of the BP author's analysis in later ones.
