Abstract
The aim of this paper is to analyze the influence of jazz in On the Road by Jack Kerouac. The main focus is on identifying jazz as a theme and its effect on characters' lives and, in addition, recognizing whether formal jazz rules were applied in the novel. To a limited extent, the paper deals with basic information about jazz, bebop in particular, and the Beat Generation, with an emphasis on Neal Cassady due to his role in the novel, and Jack Kerouac as a writer and main protagonist of the novel. Kerouac's life and his literary experimentation introduce the topic which is further discussed in the analytical part. To support the analysis, Kerouac's experimentation with spontaneous prose was introduced and its rules were partially applied to support the analysis of form and composition of the novel. Finally, a comparison between the Original Scroll and edited version of On the Road is included.

In the opening chapters a very short history of jazz should be presented; special emphasis should be placed on jazz of the 1950s, especially specific genres (e.g. be bop), artists and works that Kerouac and his peers were listening to and influenced by. Next, what roles jazz played both in mainstream American culture and in various subcultures (musicians, writers, beat generation) as represented by important examples of literary works of the period should be described. The general historical and cultural context of 1950s American society should be briefly described, especially societal changes taking place and different reactions by various groups to these changes. Pertinent biographical information on Jack Kerouac and a short overview of his important works should be featured. The composition of ON THE ROAD as well as a brief summary of the plot, characters and style of writing should be described. The longest and most important part of the paper should be a critical analysis of the use and influence of jazz in ON THE ROAD using the concepts and theories outlined in the first sections of the paper. Finally the book?s place in the overall canon of American literature should be emphasized; later works and authors who were influenced by jazz and works from the Beat generation may also be included.
