Firstly, theories of how the culture of the American South is represented in literature should be described. A brief overview of important themes and figures since the colonial period should be included: the main points which will be argued in the analytical part can be foreshadowed in these opening chapters. Since culture can be a problematic term, precise categories of literary analysis within schools of criticism (e.g. the New Criticism, Southern Agrarians) by noted academics should be outlined; modernism and modernity should be placed within this context. Historical and cultural influences on Southern literature as well as influences on the theories noted above should be presented. The ideas, facts and opinions presented in these sections should be chosen specifically to be used as tools to analyze the play(s) that are chosen for the latter parts of the paper.
A short description how the works by Williams chosen for analysis have been placed into the overall picture of contemporary American literature and especially drama should be discussed: similar dramas from the period should be compared and contrasted regarding their representations of the South. Here traditional literary analyses of the plays in terms of how they reflect images of Southern culture may be presented; these received views may be agreed with or rejected in later parts of the paper to support the DP writer?s analytical arguments.
Finally, in the longest, most important part of the DP, the writer will use the information in earlier chapters to evaluate specific aspects of the Williams? drama(s) chosen. Specific elements from Williams biography can be presented, along with biographical and historico-cultural context surrounding the tropes, themes and composition of the drama(s) selected for analysis. Again, the choice of these researched facts and opinions should directly related to drana(s) at hand. The DP author should choose and analyze specific features within the work(s) that exemplify or subvert aspects of what is / was known as traditional Southern culture. In what specific ways was the South traditionally represented in drama? In what ways do the chosen work by Williams represent new attitudes, and in what ways old ones?
