Firstly, a brief overview of the different social classes in mid-19th century America should be presented with emphasis on important issues, historical events and social changes that were occurring in the post-Civil War period. Next, theoretical paradigms of how different social groups were depicted in American literature of the period, especially in fiction, should be outlined with the goal of defining the tools that will be used in the later analytical parts of the BP. A summary with specific examples from works should be comprised of representative features ? e.g. figures of speech, settings, language, character behaviors, attitudes ? related to how social classes are portrayed in important works of literature of the late 19th century. The following section should briefly describe these representative features throughout Twain's works. The goal of the preceding two sections will be to establish patterns of depicting social class. In the next part, which should be the longest and most important part of the BP, an analysis of social class in HUCKLEBERRY FINN should be presented. This section should use the patterns described above to describe differences between classes in attitudes, behavior and conditions; specific passages from the book should be used to exemplify these patterns in greater detail. Specific ways of how HUCK FINN both represents popular patterns and contradicts them should be analyzed. The reception of the book at the time of publication and after can also be used to show these patterns.
