Dysfunctional Families in Selected Contemporary Novels
The aim of this diploma paper is to analyze ways of depicting dysfunctional families and troubled childhoods in contemporary fiction. In the introduction, the student will discuss the topic theoretically using appropriate theories (such as for ex. trauma studies as applied to literary criticism), as well as will explain literary terms necessary for her research (Bildungsroman, memoirs, biography, fictious biography, etc.). The student will then introduce the selected novels and place them in their literary context. The core of the thesis will consist of analysis and comparison of the novels, focusing mainly on the theme of coming-of-age, dysfunctional families, foster homes, unhappy childhoods, their long-term effects; and on formal means of how these are depicted. She will briefly discuss the novels´ reception. Student´s claims will be illustrated with primary sources and supported/ confronted with theoretical findings introduced in the beginning of the thesis. Finally, the students will draw conclusions from her research.
