Zásady pro vypracování
Firstly, an short overview of Puritanism should be presented, concentrating mainly on the early American colonial era and the time period in which the The Scarlet Letter is set. Next, various gender roles in the Puritan and other New England cultures of this era should be described with emphasis on the possibilities for women various stages of a women's life as well as variances among women of different social classes should be specified. Other American period cultures may be briefly contrasted, e.g. in the southern and mid-Atlantic colonies. Another part of this historical/cultural background should be comparing changes in the roles and status of women by the time the novel was written, i.e. the mid-19th century. A quick summary of women characters and tropes associated with gender in Nathanial Hawthorne's work should be presented describing significant figures and themes in the context of the period of Dark Romanticism, also mentioning other key works of the genre for contrast and comparison. All of the background chapters and information should be used directly in the longest and most important part of the BP as a means of analyzing the representation of women in the The Scarlet Letter. One key aspect should be a comparison of how the women characters are shown in terms of the historical period of the novel with how the roles and status of women in the culture had (not) changed by the mid-1800s. The reflection of Puritanism in the novel will undoubtedly play a role in this analysis, with biographical details about Hawthorne's life also used to support the BP author's conclusions.
