This paper focuses on the differences in narrative strategies in two short stories about Sherlock Holmes. In the first part of the paper, the descriptions of different kinds of narrators and ways of expressing characters' thoughts, i.e. for example direct and indirect speech, interior monologue, etc. are provided, as well as a brief summary of the historical background of detective fiction with focus on the changes in narrative style. The second part of this paper deals with finding examples of the described phenomena in "The Speckled Band" and "The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone" and explaining the observed differences between the two stories.

Zásady pro vypracování
Firstly, definitions and comparisons of different narrative strategies, techniques and other relevant terminology should be presented, including mixed forms like free indirect speech during this research one relevant set of theories regarding narrative structure should be chosen by the BP author as her main tool of analysis, e.g. that of Todorov, Genette, Culler, Phelan or McHale. A short chronological review of highlights of how narrative techniques have changed over the years in British detective fiction should follow. Finally, in the longest and most important parts of the BP, two of the Sherlock Holmes stories with widely different narrative strategies should be selected for comparison (e.g. one in first person, the other third person; one early story, the other a later one); the specific concepts defined above should be used to explore the narrative elements of the stories not only narrative voice, but also other elements that communicate information to the reader (e.g. mixed discourse). What are the effects of the different strategies? Details of period historical/cultural events can help describe, analyze and compare the different processes of storytelling in the two tales.
