Kapitola nastiňuje mimo jiné i kulturní a historické pozadí Beatnické generace a společnosti v poválečné Americe.

The first chapters of the BP should contain a short historical-cultural background of the post-WWII period in America, including social changes occurring during that time that Beat generation writers began reacting to. A theoretical background should be included, e.g. how concepts of "journey" are defined and used, beginning with an extremely brief tracing of the term in American literature in general, then adding more detail regarding early- to mid-20th century works, finally mainly how the term can be defined in Beat writers. Finally in the longest and most important chapters of the BP, particular aspects of Kerouac's ON THE ROAD should be analyzed in terms of the cultural concepts and theoretical tools described in the opening sections. The goal in these practical sections is to define clear conclusions regarding formal and thematic aspects of the novel , e.g. by analyzing direct citations of the text of the work.
