By the analysis of theological conception of ritual purity and impurity this thesis shows resources of Christian missionaries from sixteenth century and their assumptions by with which they came to Japan. The analysis of the works of enlightenment scholars and their characteristics of the concept kegare implies uncritical acceptance of knowledge about kegare from Christian missionaries from sixteenth century. Due to uncritical acceptance, Christian missionaries formed from knowledge about kegare neutral facts and attributed to these facts the non-theological context.
