In this research, cis-1,3,4,6-tetranitro-octahydroimidazo-[4,5-d]imidazole (BCHMX) in combine with insensitive explosive such as 3-nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (NTO), 1,1-diamino-2,2-dinitroethene (FOX-7) was applied as mixtures in PBX matrix bonded by polydimethylasiloxane (PDMS) and melt cast with 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT). In addition, BCHMX was combined with HMX, or RDX in three different ratios and was inserted in five polymeric matrix (Inert and energetic binders); Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), Styrene butadiene rubber (SBR), Viton A200, Hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene, HTPB, Glycidyl azide polymer, GAP.
Performance tests (Detonation velocity, Relative explosive strength), Sensitivity test (impact and friction) of the prepared compositions were measured. The detonation characteristics of the prepared samples were theoretically studied by thermodynamic codes EXPLO5. Comparisons between the theoretical and experimental data were represented and discussed. Thermal behavior of PBXs as well as the individual explosives was determined using nonisothermal DSC, TG/DTG and DTA techniques. The kinetic parameters were determined by Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS) isoconventional method and Kissinger method.
Last but not least, a co-crystal based on N,N'-dinitroethylenediamine (EDNA) and 1,5-diaminotetrazole (DAT) was synthesized. The formation of the co-crystal was tested by Scanning electron microscope (SEM), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and Raman spectroscopy. Sensitivity to impact was measured and the detonation characteristics were predicted by EXPLO5 code.
Interesting relationships were also specified and analyzed for some PBXs. By means of these relationships, it is possible to estimate, which groupings in the macromolecule of binder could be liable to their primary fission in the PBXs initiation, and also confirmed that increasing of energy content of the studied explosives lead to increase in the relative explosive strength or initiation reactivity, respectively.
Regarding to all obtained results, the aim of the study was achieved and it was concluded that BCHMX can be desensitized by its mixing with insensitive explosives in a suitable matrix leading to insensitive PBXs with good characteristics and may have applications in the future. Mixing of BCHMX with HMX or RDX in PBXs with different types of polymeric matrix gave PBX mixtures with different performance at the expense of sensitivity. The new co-crystal has a promising future for expanding the reuse of EDNA, it could be used in ammunition because of its acidity problem, with the benefit of higher nitrogen content and acceptable sensitivity to external stimuli.
