In the course Ancient Philosophy II we will focus on the philosophy of Aristotle. We will gradually go through the basic features of Aristotle's ethics, "physics" and metaphysics. Thus we will look at Aristotle's conception of the good and happy life, questions about the nature of things that naturally come into being and cease to be, and we will also focus on Aristotle's reflections on the fundamental nature of everything that exists.
In this course, we will draw on primary texts that are central to these three areas of Aristotle's philosophy (ethics, physics, metaphysics). These texts are also required for the final BA examination in philosophy, and so the course will also serve as preparation for this examination.
In the class, we will not only be concerned with faithfully rendering Aristotle's doctrines, but we will also try to approach these reflections critically and see where their strengths lie and where it is appropriate to supplement Aristotle and possibly keep some distance from him.
