Course objectives:
|
The aim of the course is to acquire knowledge and practical skills in male bladder catheterization. It focuses on single, permanent and intermittent catheterization, including nursing care and patient education.

Requirements on student
|
Fulfillment of mandatory participation in lectures and exercises. Completion of the assigned written work. Completion of a written test.

Content
|
Introduction to the topic. Anatomy and physiology of the excretory system and urine production. Symptoms of disorders of urine production or excretion. Pathophysiology of the kidneys and urinary tract, congenial defects, tumours, inflammation, neurogenic disorders, lithiasis, injuries (diagnosis and treatment). Neurogenic disorders and their surgical treatment. Epicystostomy, nephrostomy (definition, indications, contraindications, complications, prevention of infection). Single and permanent male bladder catheterization, clean intermittent catheterization (definition, recatheterization, indications, contraindications, complications, sexual issues, prevention of infection) Urinary catheters (types, materials, indications for use, drainage systems). Single catheterization of male bladder (preparation of aids, education and preparation of the man, performance, care of the man after the procedure, prevention of urinary tract infections related to single catheterization of a man). Permanent male bladder catheterisation (preparation of aids, education and preparation of the man, performance, care of the man after the procedure, care of the permanent urinary catheter, prevention of urinary tract infections related to the permanent catheter, complications). Intermittent catheterization of bladder (preparation of equipment, education and preparation of the man, performance, care of the man after the procedure, prevention of urinary tract infections, sexual problems of men in connection with intermittent catheterization). Epicystostomy, nephrostomy - nursing care.
Practical training of single and permanent catheterization of male bladder on a model in a skill laboratory. Collection of biological material. Care of the permanent urinary catheter in home care - the role of a general nurse. Prescription of medical aids. Practical training of clean intermittent bladder catheterisation on a model in a skill laboratory. Specifics of nursing care of patients with Epicystostomy, nephrostomies. Nursing care of patients with incontinence. Education and psychosocial support of patients and their relatives in connection with permanent catheter insertion in home care - nursing care, recognition of complications. Education and psychosocial support of patients and their relatives in relation to clean intermittent catheterisation in home care - nursing care, recognition of complications.

Competences acquired |
Students are able to justify the indication for catheterization and correctly perform bladder catheterization. Students learn the appropriate nursing procedures for catheterization and its complications. They are able to develop an individualized care plan for patients with permanent catheter and with clean intermittent catheterization. |
