Course objectives:
|
The aim of the course is to introduce students to some of the current historical trends of the present, and to trace their roots in the 19 and 20 centuries. Attention will be drawn to the development of historiography and current discussions regarding its tendencies. An increased level of attention will be drawn to the important movements of the present or the recent past.

Requirements on student
|
There will be an oral exam at the end of the course and students will submit a list of at least 10 titles (books or articles) of literature.

Content
|
History as a science; narrative history; the origin of edition sets and magazines in the 19th century.
The crisis of historicism; the discovery of the relativity of values; Lamprecht.
The beginnings of historical sociology; Durkheim, Weber, and the American school (Turner and others).
The "Annales" school; its basic characteristics, founders, and further development.
Historical social science; Germany, Fischer, Wehler, Kocka.
Marxism, its main features, the specifics of Leninism, the development and the representatives from this group of historians.
Formalism, its characteristics and main representatives.
Post-modern period; Lawrence Stone; an outline against the doctrines known till that time; Foucault, Derrida, Lyotard; Fukuyama and his end of history.
The way from macro-history to micro-history. Ginzburg, Braudel, the history of everydayness.
The linguistic turn.
Historical debates of the present. The return to the early tradition. History being literature.
