In this seminar we will discuss some key texts in the contemporary philosophy of emotions.
We introduce and discuss the main theoretical questions about emotions, i.e., What does it mean for emotions to be rational? How do our reflections on emotions shape our self-awareness and self-understanding?What is the epistemic value of emotive bodily gestures and affective bodily feelings? How can emotions support our epistemic and moral life?

Obsah
|
Week 1: Introduction: Topic and work formats; warm-up discussion:
Robert C. Solomon,1976/1993, The Passions: Emotions and the Meaning of Life (Indianapolis: Hackett), Preface (pp. xiii-xix) & Introduction (pp. 1-26)
Classical text presenting an 'existentialist theory of emotion'
Week 2: Peter Goldie, 2011, The Mess Inside, chapter 3: "Grief: A Case Study" (pp. 56-75)
Strong voice in the resurgence of philosophical emotion theory in early 2000s; occasion to familiarize us with contemporary philosophy of emotion
Week 3: Martha Nussbaum, 2004. "Emotions as Judgements of Value and Importance". In Thinking About Feeling: Contemporary Philosophers on Emotions, ed. R. C. Solomon, pp. 183-199. New York: Oxford University Press.
The most famous cognitive account of emotions with important references to Ancient Philosophy
Week 4: Kym Maclaren (2011) "Emotional clichés and authentic passions" Phenomenology and the Cognitive Sciences 10, 45-65.
Takes issue with cognitive theories of emotion, especially Solomon's; own account based on Merleau-Ponty's notions of embodiment and passivity
Week 5: Ratcliffe, M. 2005. "The feeling of being". Journal of Consciousness Studies, 8-10: 43-60.
A prominent contemporary existentialist approach to emotions, with significant implication to psychotherapy and psychopathology
Week 6: Jan Slaby, 2008. "Affective intentionality and the feeling body", Phenomenology and Cognitive Science, 7: 429-444.
Emotions have been usually characterised by their intentional object. But what kind of intentionality do emotions disclose? What role does their phenomenal character play?
Week 7: John Haugeland, "Understanding Natural Language" in: Having Thought: Essays in the Metaphysics of Mind Harvard UP, 1998, pp. 47-61; "Introduction: Toward a New Existentialism" pp. 1-2.
Are emotions inherently human? This paper elucidates the famous slogan: "The trouble with Artificial Intelligence is that Computers don't Give a Damn".
Week 8: Morton, A., 2010. "Epistemic emotions". In The Oxford handbook of philosophy of emotion, ed. P. Goldie, pp. 385-399. Oxford: Oxford University Press.
What is the role of emotions in knowledge? Could they contribute to the epistemic success? This paper will address these questions by pointing to a specific kind of emotions, i.e., epistemic emotions, and by employing a virtue theoretic approach to knowledge.
Week 9: Colombetti, G., Krueger, J. 2015. "Scaffoldings of the Affective Mind". Philosophical Psychology, 28:8, 1157-1176.
This paper is a strong challenge to the internalist approaches to emotion. It focuses on how emotions are embedded in social interactions, material cultures and practices.
Week 10 María Lugones (1987) "Playfulness, "World"-Travelling, and Loving Perception" Hypatia 2(2), 3-19.
Classical Latina feminist text. It is a strong position on "worlds" as contexts situated living and on love
Week 11: Hanne De Jaegher, 2019. "Loving and Knowing: Reflections for an engaged epistemology". Phenomenology and the Cognitive Science, https://doi.org/10.1007/s11097-019-09634-5
What is the role of love in knowledge creation? This text discusses the intertwining of love and knowledge from the point of view of the embodied mind.
Week 12: Laura Candiotto, 2022. "Loving the Earth by Loving a Place". Constructivist Foundations, 17(3).
Can love ground environmental ethics? What is its role in the development of environmental virtues? What are the challenges that a loving environmental ethics has to face?
