Course objectives:
|
Aim of this course is an effort to outline of the literary evolution on the territory of present Bulgaria and Macedonia in 19th century. The course will analyse Bulgarian culture life at the turn of the old and new period. The Bulgarian Revival has the title role in this chronological concretization. The aim of the course is not only chronological interpretation of the literary works of Bulgarian Revival authors, but also literary analyse of the typical genres and forms of this cultural period.

|
Introduction - basic catogories of the Bulgarian Revival. Between Enlightenment and Revival - Southslavic 18 th century. Periodization of the Bulgarian 19 th century. Some dabatable moments and its analyse. Historiography and beginnings of the Revival. Paisius of Hilendar. Specification of the language question. Linguistic "schools" and its representatives. The Romantism and Bulgarian Revival. Political and literary Romantism. Bulgarian Revival and the Ecclesiastical question. The struggle for an independent ecclesiastical organisation between policy and literature. Cultural emigration and Bulgarian Revival. Backgrounds, functions and charakteristic phenomena. The folklore aesthetics. Symbolical functions of the folklore. Between Romantism and Realism. Culminant period of the Bulgarian Revival. Its representatives. Revolutionary period of the Bulgarian Revival - Georgi S. Rakovski. Lyuben Karalavelov and Hristo Botev - an analyse of works. The Liberation of Bulgaria. Summary and synthesis.

The students could have a notion about basic sociocultural categories of Bulgarian 19th century. They could appropriately analyse these problems: evolution of the language question, process of formation of modern national identity and formation of author's literature. |
