Course objectives:
The aim of this course is to introduce students to the basic terminology and main literary-scientific, cultural, and sociological theories of popular literature and, at the same time, to its position in contemporary mass culture. Students will follow the development of the perception of popular literature in the context of modern literature and culture in general, including the role of censorship and social-political conceptions of given time periods (operations of "exclusion" and "replacement"). Special attention will be paid to the relationship between popular and artistic literature, and the ways that they influence each other and fade into one another; furthermore, the relationship of the field of literary culture to other media, especially to film and television.
Requirements on student
Credit will depend on regular attendance and active participation during the seminars (only three absences are permitted per term) and in case of e-learning a study of the recommended literature and an essay about selected work.
