Course objectives:
|
The objective of the course is to introduce the students to the problems of Roma studies in the Czech Republic and in the world. Students will be introduced to the methods and terminology in this field of study, to the basic Czech and foreign Romani literature.

Requirements on student
|
The course is completed with an exam. Requirements - student activity during the semester, performance of assigned tasks and final written exam.

|
What are the Romani studies? Their place among the social sciences. Discipline terminology.
The Roma as political element. Ethnicity of the Roma as a theoretical and metodological problem.
Beginning of the Romani studies, role of Indo-European studies in its constitution, first researchers.
Hypothesis on the origin of the Roma.
Theory on the Indian origin of the Roma and linguistic arguments.
Physical and cultural anthropology findings.
The Roma in historical documents.
Basic data on the Roma in the Czech and Slovak Republic.
Ethno-social, linguistic and demographic characteristics of the Roma in the Czech Republic.
Basic data on the Roma in the world.
