Course objectives:
|
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with geographic information systems (GIS). Basic terms, GIS structure, GIS applications, analytic functions, the spatial object representation, visualization and output generation are introduced.
|
Requirements on student
|
The assignment is granted upon submission of all tasks, elaboration and defence of the seminar project, and required attendance to seminars. The examination consists of both oral and written parts. The level of knowledge and the student's ability to apply acquired knowledge to practical problem-solving are examined.

Basic terms.
GIS - definition, historical development, various aspects, relations to other computer systems.
GIS structure - hardware, software, data, people - characteristics.
Fields of GIS application, examples of GIS application in practice.
Modelling of geographic objects.
Representation of spatial objects.
Activities within the GIS project - characteristics.
Data sources - overview.
The analytic and synthetic function of GIS.
Data visualization - overview.
Output generation: graphs and maps.
Methods of thematic cartography.
Historical cartography and old maps.
