The present dissertation focuses on the development of interreligious relations between
Christians, Muslims and Jews in the Iberian Peninsula during the High Middle Ages (11th
?13thcenturies). It analyses the concepts of "reconquista" and "convivencia", which have
fundamentally influenced modern and contemporary understandings of interreligious relations
in the peninsula. Despite strong criticism, the theories advocating these concepts remain
relevant in both lay awareness and academic research. The main aim of this thesis is to analyse
sources that make it possible to reconstruct the basic characteristics of specific interreligious
relations in the peninsula. Subsequently, the thesis compares the results of the analysis of the
theory of reconquista and convivencia with the results of the analysis of the source texts. The
thesis presents the conclusions that both theories are wrong in their assumption of the
uniqueness of Spanish history and, on the contrary, argues that medieval interreligious relations
in the Iberian Peninsula represent a specific but at the same time typical example of the
interreligious interactions that took place between members of Islam, Christianity and Judaism
in the Mediterranean region at that time.
