Course objectives:

The aim of this course is to adopt the theoretical principles of stylistics and develop students' ability to work with authoritative sources. Students will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge through written work, with the focus on academic writing.

Requirements on student

All assignments must be completed and submitted as indicated on the Moodle course page. There are no exceptions.
Students must take responsibility for their own learning and progress.
Specific requirements: should there be a need to run this course as distance learning, students will have access to all materials through the course page on Moodle. Each assignment can be found and submitted on Moodle. Feedback for assignments will also be uploaded to Moodle. If necessary, students should request an online consultation to support their learning. Such consultations will be held through MS Teams.

Content

Unit 1. Introduction to academic writing. This unit discusses the aims, content and structure of an academic essay.
Unit 2. Conventions and presentation. Formatting and presenting your work.
Unit 3. Research skills. How to find, assess and choose sources for an essay.
Unit 4. Planning and outlining. This unit discusses the importance of planning an essay.
Unit 5. Vocabulary. Using persuasive language.
Unit 6. Working with sources. How to engage with authoritative voices in support of our argument.
Unit 7. The first paragraph. This unit analyses the structure of a single paragraph and discusses how to present your ideas.
Unit 8. The second paragraph. Working with critical voices.
Unit 9. Introduction and conclusions. How to write a compelling introduction and a convincing conclusion.
Unit 10. Editing and proofreading.
