Course objectives:
Through analysing canonical plays, the course will examine the trends in American drama of the twentieth century. The discussion will mostly follow a chronological order. Particular attention will be given to seminal plays of the period - Streetcar Named Desire, Long Day's Journey into Night, Death of a Salesman etc. and to their reception. Students will also be encouraged to go to the theatre at least once during the winter term. As the dramatic landscape often reflects the debates and ideas of the period in which the plays were written, students will become acquainted with the socio-cultural background of the selected plays.
Requirements on student
The students will be required to study all the reading assignments prior to each seminar and participate actively in the discussion. During the term the students will be expected to go to the theatre, to watch a play by an American/British playwright and report shortly on it in the seminar. The participants will also perform a part of a chosen play.
