Course objectives:
|
The aim of the lecture series is to increase students' orientation in the issues of religiosity, religious expressions of people in the past and their socio-cultural context. The history of religion introduces the Abrahamic traditions - their origin, development and influence on European thought. The main focus will be on Christianity, but Judaism and Islam will also be discussed, with an emphasis on their interaction. Students should gain an overview of the development of the Catholic and Evangelical Church and the emergence of other Christian denominations, papal politics and diplomacy, church political activities, the concept of secularization will be mentioned. The course will also acquaint you with the source base and professional literature on individual topics.

The condition for obtaining the credit is participation in lectures, reading the assigned recommended literature, oral interview.

Judaism and Christianity as two monotheistic religions, the Bible.
Christians and Jews in the Roman Empire. Christianity - an ideology at the end of antiquity.
Christianity in medieval Europe - formation of church hierarchy, codification of liturgy.
Clash of Christianity and Islam - Crusades, reconquista.
Jews and their position in medieval and early modern Europe.
Attempts to reform the Christian Church - Hussites, Reformation, Counter-Reformation.
Confessional disputes in the early modern period, baroque piety.
Rationalization of faith during the Enlightenment, the onset of secularization.
Political activation of churches in the 19th century, confessionalization, anti-Semitism.
Churches during the world wars, the Holocaust and Zionism.
II. Vatican Council. Churches in communist totalitarianism.

Competences acquired |
Students should gain a basic overview and orientation in the development of the three major world religions - Judaism, Christianity, Islam. They should be able to formulate the basic developmental tendencies of Christianity from late antiquity to the present, and outline the mutual interaction of Judaism, Christianity and Islam in the environment of Western civilization. |
