Course objectives:
|
The aim of this course is to introduce the basic outline of style development in the art of Czech and Central Europe in the period of Middle Ages and the Renaissance until the ingress of modern art in the beginning of 20th century. The subject-matter interpretation underlines the role of leading artists and focuses on the ideological and socio-cultural background of the origin and the specific works of individual artistic movements.
The aim of the seminar (45 min.) is reading and geting acquainted with exemplery theoretical texts and selected chapters from interpretative contemporary books.

1. Attendance at classes
2. Acquaintance of required text for each lesson
Credit is determined by submitting a paper on an assigned topic (at least eight pages of standard typescript, with academic apparatus) and an interview where the student will demonstrate their knowledge of the subject matter (every student will bring a list of literature with a minimum of five titles).
Seminar:
Reading and Interpretation selected texts (Milan Kundera etc.)
If pandemic measures are in force, teaching will take place partly or completely online and more emphasis will be placed on self-study. Students will primarily work with a reading list of texts and will be awarded an exam for processing one essay (at least six pages of standard typescript, with academic apparatus) and one presentation on a selected topic.

Competences acquired |
Students will obtain a basic orientation in the problems of Bohemian and Central Europe Art from the Middle Ages to the Modern period and will become familiar with the stylistic attributes of individual styles. During individual lessons, the students will encounter art works and authors that are attributable to individual style periods. Students will gain an understanding of the strategies in modern visual culture and will master the skills necessary for a theoretical and critical consideration of cultural-historical phenomena. |
