Course content
|
Introduction to the field of hygiene and epidemiology. Health status of the population in the CR. External and internal factors influencing health status. Methods of health status examination. Epidemiological studies. Health-promotion projects. Harmful environmental effects and their monitoring. Defence systems of the organism. Individual susceptibility. Evaluation of health risks. Classification of carcinogens according to the IARC. Hygiene principles for work with carcinogens. Categorization of work and announcing high-risk work; its meaning. Risk assessment of work in health care facilities. Periodic preventive examination. Hygiene issues related to exposure to noise, vibration, dust, and prolonged excessive unilateral strain. Health consequences. Prevention options. Ergonomics. Effects of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation on the organism. Prevention options. Hygiene issues related to drinking water. Alternative choices of drinking water. Food hygiene (direct risks). Healthy food pyramid. Strategies to support healthier nutrition. Biological and chemical contamination of food. Additive substances in the diet. Childhood and adolescent hygiene. Evaluation of physical development of the paediatric population. External and internal factors influencing physical development. Hygiene of the educational process. Hygiene aspects of the internal environment: humidity, temperature, lighting, chemical contamination (including the issue of exposure to formaldehyde, radon, and asbestos).

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the subject is to acquaint students with basic information from the field of hygiene and epidemiology, especially non-infectious diseases. Students will be acquainted with the major factors influencing the health status of the population and with the mechanism of health risk evaluation.
The student will be well-versed in the area of health protection and promotion in the workplace (with a special emphasis on hospital hygiene) and in prevention of selected civilization diseases.

Oral examination, Written examination
Completion of compulsory 80% attendance at the practicum sessions and seminars. Successful completion of a written test.
