Course content
|
Who are the British? - nations, symbols and stereotypes. Early history; myths and legends. Medieval times to the 18th century. Georgian and Victorian England. Regions and regional identities, North and South divide. The Irish Issue. Identities - ethnic, class, religious etc. The monarchy - image and reality, role, value and future Attitudes - stereotypes vs. change, conservatism, multiculturalism.

Learning outcomes
|
The student understands aspects of British culture in historical, geographical, linguistic, political and socio-cultural contexts. The student is able to critically evaluate contemporary social and cultural phenomena in Great Britain within their historical context and is able to use the acquired knowledge in various intercultural situations (KPUAJ competence 1.1.4). The student understands the importance of taking an active interest in current cultural and political developments and in cultural production in Great Britain (KPUAJ competence 1.1.5). The student understands the importance of using reliable sources of information and is able to critically evaluate sources focused on British culture and society (KPUAJ competence 1.1.6).
The course enables students to develop their comparative and communicative abilities and their intercultural competence.
