Course content
Grammar: Auxiliary verbs. Present simple, continuous, passive. Past simple, continuous, passive. Past perfect simple, continuous, passive. Will/going to. Modal verbs. Irregular verbs. Topics: Wonders of the modern world. Job: doctor-cum-clown. World of art - Pablo Picasso and Ernest Hemingway. Different sounds in different countries. Holiday and travel. History of pizza's origins. Content of the first six units of New Headway Intermediate, including Workbook exercises and listening exercises.

Learning outcomes
Language course of general English, level pre-intermediate. The course focuses on everyday topics, developing basic language skills, such as reading, listening, writing and speaking in simple communicative situations. Students will practice using the present simple, present continuous, past simple and past continuous tenses. They also know how to use basic modal verbs, verb patterns and passive voice. All the texts and listening materials are based on authentic situations.
Students will learn basic tenses, gain standard vocabulary sufficient for communication in everyday life. Constructions for requesting, refusing and asking questions will be acquired while modal verbs used. With numerous audio exercises students will gain ability "to hear" the language without textual support and note down important information.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of English at level A1 at least. At the beginning of semester, students can be tested and on the basis of the entrance test results, they can be redeployed to the course of a different language level according to CEFR.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written examination

Written test (at least 70%). Part of the test: grammar, listening and reading comprehension.
