Course content
Crusades. Ottoman conquests: Balkan and Central Europe. Attitudes of Christians to Islam during the period of the Turkish conquest. Rolling back Turks from Central Europe and the Balkans. Russian conquest in the Caucasus and in Central Asia. Colonial expansion of the West in the Muslim world. New approaches towards Islam in modern history. Attempts at a Christian-Muslim dialogue. The relationships between the West and the Muslim world during the period of world terrorism. The contemporary state of Christian-Muslim dialogue. Muslim communities in the West. Muslims in the Czech Republic.

Learning outcomes
The objective of this course is to consider the relationships between the Muslim and Western Christian world from the time of the Ottoman conquests till today, not only from the perspective of wars and violence, but also from the perspective of inter-religious dialogue and attempts at mutual understanding.
Student will gain an understanding of the relationships between the Muslim world and the West in Modern times by considering the contemporary state of those relationships and their historical roots. Student will also consider the origin of prejudices against Islam in the West, as well as militant attitudes of some circles in contemporary Muslim world against the West.
