Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is, first, to provide students with a basic outline of the political, administrative, and religious history of the Holy Roman Empire from the attempt at its reform during the reign of Emperor Maxmilian I at the end of the 15th century till the abolition of this union in 1806.
Students will master basic facts about the development, organization, and functioning of the Holy Roman Empire. They will learn to distinguish absolutist states (France, Prussia) from the decentralized and multi-confessional Holy Roman Empire, which partly resembles contemporary, unifying Europe. They will be introduced to the significant status of the Bohemian kingdom in the Holy Roman Empire and will understand the vital connection between "Czech" and "German" history.
