Learning outcomes
The course deals with the religious life in Bohemia from 1620 to 1750. This history is seen not only in the frame of the development of Catholic church, but also from an ordinary-baroque-human´s view. The religious life in the athmosphere of baroque piety will be analysed in the context of social and political development of the Czech lands (Habsburg monarchy). The course should present the concrete instruments and demonstrations of popular piety that became the basic part of religious life in the baroque Bohemia. We will also deal with death and preparation for death in the frame of Catholic religious practice because the topic of death and posthumous fate of the soul creates the very core of Catholic doctrine and it influenced the behaviour of all the Catholics.
The students should orientate in the history of religious life in Catholic environment of 17 and 18 centuries. They should realize that the baroque piety is a mixture of sacral and profan elements. They should understand why and how the enlightened era changed baroque religious stereotypes.
