Course content
General principles of structure determination and identification of organic compounds. Determination of physical constants of pure compounds. Classification of organic compounds using solubility parameter. Adjustment of mixtures and purification of samples before identification - application of simple techniques of distillation, sublimation, crystalization, filtration and ultrafiltration, extraction of solid and liquid samples with liquid, solid phase extraction and microextraction, supercritical fluid extraction, gel and adsorption column chromatography. Elemental analysis in organic compounds. Classical and modern automatic methods of determination of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, halogen, sulfur and oxygen in organic compounds. Basic methods of constitution analysis of organic compounds. Preparation of derivatives, identification and structure elucidation of compounds using chemical, spectral and chromatographic techniques. Identification, structure elucidation and determination of carbohydrates. Identification, structure elucidation and determination of organic compounds containing halogen. Identification, structure elucidation and determination of alcohols and phenols. Identification, structure elucidation and determination of aldehydes and ketones. Identification, structure elucidation and determination of ethers, chinons and sacharides. Identification, structure elucidation and determination of carboxylic acids. Identification, structure elucidation and determination of esters, anhyrdides and chlorides of carboxylic acids. Identification, structure elucidation and determination of amines and aminoacids. Identification, structure elucidation and determination of amides, nitriles of carboxylic acids, nitrocompounds, nitrosocompounds and azocompounds. Identification, structure elucidation and determination of organic compounds containing sulfur.

Learning outcomes
In this course, students will learn basic chemical, spectral and separation methods used in the analysis of organic compounds, with particular emphasis on the possibility of a combination of approaches and methods.
Graduate of the course has knowledge of general classification procedures of organic compounds on the basis of solubility and chemical reactions, with the possibilities of characterization of compounds using physical constants, procedures for adjustments, purification and separation of samples, qualitative and quantitative elemental analysis, constitutional analysis and preparation of derivatives for the characterization purpose.

Basic courses of Organic and Analytical Chemistry, course of Atomic and molecular spectroscopy, course of Analytical separation methods.

Written part of exam - identification of selected organic compound. Oral part of exam.
