Course content
Computer network classification Reference model ISO/OSI Functions and description of separate layers of ISO/OSI Comparison of ISO/OSI and TCP/IP Transmission media Access methods Basic network types (Token Ring, ArcNet, Ethernet, FDDI, 100VG AnyLan, ATM) Routing, routers Network security, attacks and attack prevention Network hardware, servers, resistance to break down Wireless networks

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce the students to the key concepts in the data networks area. It focuses on the communication theory, basic network types and communication protocols, computer and data network planning, linking and general network security. Also the introduction to HW technologies focusing on servers and network HW is included.
Students will be able to understand data network communication, to describe commonly used technologies, to analyse local network security and to propose steps towards its improvement.
