Introduction to the topic, terminology, key concepts. System, science and system access. Modelling, model. Introduction to information and informatics theory. Ways of understanding the concept of information. People and information. Sources of information. Data, information content of data. Information transformation. Data processing. Communication chain. Signals and their transmission through the communication chain. Data compression. Cybernetic concepts and cybernetic abstraction. Summary of discussed topics, emphasising the context and suggesting further direction of this topic´s development.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of this introductory course is to integrate and consolidate the basic knowledge from previous types of study.
Students will be familiar with the issues they will be studying in the following years, they will understand the key concepts such as Information, Entropy, Communication channel etc. They will be able to give reasons for their findings and to defend them in a professional discussion.

Examination is written and oral. The prerequisite for sitting the examination is to be awarded an assignment.
