Course content
Gradient and indeterminacy: focus on morphological and syntactic level. Modality and modal verbs. Active and passive voice. Typological characteristics of English and Czech. Synthesis and analysis in English morphology and syntax. Nominal tendencies in English: non-finite forms and verbo-nominal constructions. Word order, information packaging and FSP.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to explore general linguistic concepts (e.g. the notion of gradient) and apply them to various language devices in the language system of English. The course focuses on the typological characteristics of English in comparison with Czech. Additionally, selected language devices are approached from the functional and textual perspective.
Students will acquire knowledge of selected issues of general linguistics and typology, and will be able to apply it to the system of the English language. They will be able to interpret language means functionally and with respect to the textual level of analysis.

Assessment methods and criteria
Home assignment evaluation, Presentation

Active participation in seminars + preparedness for seminars (i.e. reading assigned texts in advance). Oral presentation on a selected issue of present-day English. Written assignment (the task will be specified in LMS Moodle).
