Course content
Humor, wit and hyperbole in literature, short stories, reflection of current social phenomena. Franz Kafka - Die Verwandlung, Wladimir Kaminer - Russendisko, Gabriel Laub, Ephraim Kishon, Jaromir Konecny. The issue of youth and adolescence in literature under the pressure of adverse political circumstances or social conventions. J.W. Goethe - Die Leiden des jungen Werthers, Ulrich Plenzdorf - Die neuen Leiden des jungen W., Jana Hensel - Zonenkinder, Barbara Bollwahn - Der Klassenfeind und ich, Jan Faktor - Georgs Sorgen um die Vergangenhei,Sheila Och - Karel, Jarda und das wahre Leben. The image of war, revolution and coup in literature and film. Realistic, satirical and nostalgic view. E.M. Remarque - Im Westen nichts Neues, Günther Grass - Die Blechtrommel, Thomas Brussig - Helden wie wir, Am kürzeren Ende der Sonnenallee. Modern German literature, authorship of immigrants, pop literature, bestsellers, trivial literature. Linguistic innovation, literature and film. Patrick Süsskind - Das Parfum, Bernhard Schlink - Der Vorleser, Daniel Kehlmann - Die Vermessung der Welt, Feridun Zaimoglu - Kanaksprak, Heinz Konsalik - Bluthochzeit in Prag.

Learning outcomes
The aim is an ability to be knowledgeable in literary texts by German writing authors, an ability to assess individually their quality, significance, value and depth of the reflection of contemporary world, its dramatic changes and ethical values.
Student is competent to interpret the texts with regard to the literary-scientific, historical, sociological, cultural and psychological aspect.

Successful pass in NELI1.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written examination, Student performance assessment

Active participation in the seminar (min. 75%). Paper (topics of papers will be proposed at the beginning of the semester), a written essay. List of literature (5 titles in original of own choice to the topics given). Accomplishment of the tasks given during the semester. Final test in the contents of lectures and seminars.
